When lost in the fog of strategy, turn on your headlights

Strategy is one of those hard things to define. A couple of weeks ago we had a go at trying to define it on the Strictly Boardroom column on MiningNews. I’m not sure how much clarity we added, but you can read it here: “When lost in the fog of strategy, turn on your headlights” or contact me for a copy.
We go through a series of quotes on the subject from experts, such as John Kay, Michael Porter, Richard Rumelt and Pankaj Ghemawhat, and find that it is both many things (capabilities, market insight, competitive advantage, mission, vision, difference, being unique, design, coordination, focus, etc.) and many things it is not (size, innovation, speed, charisma, Powerpoint slides, etc.) and a few experts who have completely given up on defining the subject!
For keen followers of the Strictly Boardroom column, our book “Strictly (Mining) Boardroom Volume II: A Practitioners Guide for Next Generation Directors” was published last year and is available as a paperback or e-book from Major Street Publishing or Amazon. We’re pleased to say that the book received a very positive review in the AusIMM Bulletin.
