This year I am proud to be helping organise both the inaugural Western Australian and All-Australian Finals to qualify for the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) Young Persons’ World Lecture Competition. As you will have no doubt guessed from the number of presentations on this website I am a passionate believer in the effective communication of good science, engineering and research.
The competition is open to all postgraduate and undergraduate students, under the age of 28, studying materials, minerals, mining, packaging, clay technology and wood science subjects.
Following preliminary rounds at Western Australia’s universities there will be a Western Australia Final held on Thursday 16th July at the University of Western Australia (UWA), with the winner qualifying for the All-Australian Final competing against other state winners.
The All-Australian Finals will again be held at UWA on Thursday 13th August.
The winner of the All-Australian Final will represent Australia in the World Finals to be held in Drogheda, Ireland, between 19th-22nd October, competing against national champions from Brazil, Hong Kong, Ireland, Malaysia, Singapore, South Africa, UK and the USA. The All-Australian winner will receive a free trip to Ireland so that they can compete in the event! Prizes for the World Final include a MacBook Air and GBP2,000 (1st), GBP1,500 (2nd) and GBP1,000 (3rd).
If you would like to enter the competition, help with its organisation or just watch the proceedings, please contact myself (john.sykes@greenfieldsresearch.com) or Bob Agar (bagar@agarss.com.au). We are still looking for sponsors for the All-Australian and regional finals and anyone willing to help with organisation.
Information posters are available for the event on my Slideshare for both the Western Australia and All-Australian Finals.
